When we’re composing profiles online, men have a natural tendency to sound too narcissistic. Now this isn’t always your fault. After all, the profile page is supposed to be “about you.” So you were only following the instructions – the dating website told you to write about yourself and opine on your personal preferences. So that’s what you did.
But we forget, in an actual human conversation, people take turns talking. Now on the internet, we of course can’t give her a chance to talk. She’s merely reading some text on her screen. However, what we can do is make some mild reference about how we’ve just been ‘talking too much’ and we’d ‘really value her opinion.’
In general, both men and women absolutely love being asked for their opinion – from a person who is legitimately interested. Put yourself in her shoes. Before she got to your profile, she probably read dozens of others. And these profile sentences seem to always start with the word “I” – as in, ” I really like taking dance classes,” and ” I am looking for a partner,” and ” I love sipping white wine.” Whereas in an actual conversation, the man would have said:
“I really like my new dance class! Do you dance?”
So near the end of your profile text, let’s create a sentence that gives your profile a less self-absorbed tone. I call this sentence, the “anti-narcissist remark.” Here are a few examples:
