Does Internet Dating Work?
Welcome to the world of internet dating
A brief history of internet dating
Until quite recently, internet dating just wasn’t practical. Here are a few reasons why.
- There weren’t enough women online. Match.com (the largest internet dating service) went live in 1995. At that time in the U.S., barely 10% of the nation used the internet. And of these, many were university researchers, corporate IT zombies, and computer geeks. Not really the best crowd to find a hot date in.
- There weren’t many computers in the home. While some women had access to the internet at work and school, these environments were often not the best place to browse for men online. But, with the advent of the “home PC” women are now free to look for love in the privacy of their bedrooms.
- The shameful stigma. Nowadays it seems like every girl I meet has at least had one internet date. But we forget that such meetings were, at one time considered bizarre and highly frowned upon. We are fortunate to be living in a time in which the culture has finally adopted the internet as a socially acceptable means of communication. Additionally, the so called “Web 2.0″ social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, Friendster) have opened the doors to a whole new world of single female computer enthusiasts.
The below chart shows the percentage of U.S. internet users since 1990 (in millions).

Why internet dating works so great (if you know what you’re doing)
In traditional social networking venues (e.g. work, bars, clubs) one is constrained by a slew of social pressures and obstacles that do not exist online. An ambitious male can only engage in a handful of approaches in one evening out on the town. But a savvy internet user who has mastered the art of creating attraction via his 2D profile page, can meet literally hundreds of women, and could potentially have a date every night.
